THE SLURPS
The Slurps was my second band after I moved to Florida.
It was the first that played out regularly, altho sadly we never recorded anything.
The shows were a bit intense. Spitting beer, or just throwing full beers, empty cans, trash cans, bar stools, etc, at us was to be expected. I would wrap my amps in garbage bags to help protect them from the beer, and always used my cheap guitar for these gigs. If you ever saw that scene from The Runaways movie where Kim Fowley is teaching them to dodge crap being thrown at them, that's what these gigs were like.
But it was all in good fun.
It was me on guitar, Mike on drums, and Preston was on bass (Ryan and Nick also played bass in this band). The singer, Robbie, was like a cross between Darby Crash and Iggy Pop onstage. The video doesn't do him justice, but I still consider him one of the best punk frontmen I ever played with.
Our first show was at kind of a posh club. The crowd went ballistic. I later heard there was $2800 worth of damage done during this gig. At one point, someone took the singer, lifted him up, and dropped him on a custom made glass table that shattered on impact. Our singer then took a piece of the glass and sliced his chest repeatedly, He still has major scars from that to this day. Long story short, the show was cut short, we were kicked out, the cops were called, and for some reason a group of bikers wanted to beat us up over it all. We told our singer to run, then literally threw out equipment in the back of a pickup truck. I squealed the tires on our exit as the other band members were jumping in the back of the already moving truck. There were quite a few shows where we had to make a hasty Dukes Of Hazard style exit for our own safety.
Real hit and run punk rock.
Needless to say, this band didn't last very long, but these were some of the funnest shows I've ever played.
Good times....
I recently got a contact through this site from the drummer, Mike. Apparently we did record a demo. He has them available for download here. The recordings are better than I remembered. Give a listen...

This is a vid from a show at Back Booth in Orlando. It's like the last 3 songs of the set. This is probably like 2005-ish, maybe a bit earlier...
